Why links are important
"Off Page" factors have become very important with the search engines. Solid link popularity can make or break you with the search engines.
What is link popularity, you ask? To make it simple, it is the number and quality of incoming links that point to your site.
These other websites think that your website is important so maybe the search engine should to.
This is the biggest part of how the search optimization game is being played today.
One of the most difficult areas of web marketing is building link popularity. Search engines do not want artificial or useless links. They want links from authoritive sites or from sites that share the same focus as your's.
Here is a direct quote from Google:
“In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.”

How it is accomplished
We recommend the following methods for building natural links:
- Provide quality, relevant and unique content that will encourage others to link to you without even asking.
- Contact complimentary sites and ask them to link to you, and in return, link back to them.
- Find out who is linking to your competitors and ask them to link to you as well.
- Create a link page on your site that allows for trading of links with other sites complimentary to your's.
